Bachelor of Education (Middle School)

Middle School students have distinctive requirements including social, physical, emotional and psychological needs associated with adolescence. This program will qualify you to teach Years 4 to 9, giving you the flexibility to work across both primary and secondary schools.

Our Bachelor of Education is an approved teacher education program with the Queensland College of Teachers. As a JCU Education graduate, you will have the skills and qualifications to seek employment across Australia and beyond.

You will develop specialist skills needed for teaching in rural and remote areas, and you will be at the forefront of education for sustainability. Our program also focuses on ensuring you have the skills to help improve Indigenous education outcomes.

Who will I teach?

The Middle School major qualifies you to teach Years 4 to 9 – meaning you can work in both primary and secondary schools.

Middle School students have distinct requirements, including:

• social needs

• physical needs

• emotional needs

• psychological needs.

This degree will equip you to teach across a range of essential curriculum areas in primary and middle schools, including:

• English

• mathematics

• social studies

• science.

Placements in and across our region

Gaining professional experience in schools is an integral part of the Middle Years Education program at JCU and commences in the first year of study. This involves practical work in State, Catholic and Independent schools and a variety of other educational sites in rural and remote locations, as well as wider community settings.

You will need to have a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before starting professional placements in a school. Professional workshops are held throughout the degree, including a compulsory five-day intensive Professional Orientation Program on campus.

A world of career opportunities

Graduates can apply to register with the Queensland College of Teachers and can teach in State, Catholic and Independent schools. Other career paths include working in:

• government departments (e.g. children’s services, family services, education and health)

• education administration

• community development roles

• educational attractions.

Innovative Learning Spaces – Now Open

The next generation of teachers now have a new space to prepare themselves for the classrooms of the future with the opening of the Education Central building on James Cook University’s Townsville campus.

Joint degree options

Joint degrees give students expertise in a complementary discipline in reduced time and can enhance career prospects. At JCU the Bachelor of Education (Middle School) degree can be combined as a joint degree in:
