About nursing

The International Council of Nurses defines nursing as a profession that “encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well, and in all settings” (2010).

A Bachelor of Nursing Science from JCU prepares you for nursing practice with a unique regional focus that you will not find anywhere else in Australia.

Focus on regional healthcare

Situated in the heart of northern Queensland, JCU offers a unique learning setting. Our curriculum responds to our tropical climate, rural surrounds and large Indigenous communities. You will gain valuable clinical experience over your course of study.

You will graduate with work-ready skills to transition in to the registered nurse’s role in a range of health settings which acknowledge:

  • the distinctive needs of north Queensland’s under-served and tropical populations

  • the challenges and rewards of regional, rural and remote nursing

  • broad health issues and those that are unique to the region

This deep understanding of the regional issues complements the core nursing knowledge required to practice in any community from major metropolitan centres to smaller remote centres.

A healthy choice of career options

Nursing graduates are highly valued and may find employment throughout Australia and overseas in a variety of nursing positions. Nurses work in many places, not only in hospitals. They work in the community, industry, health care agencies and for a vast range of employers which, in addition to hospitals and health services, can include defence forces, non-government agencies, government departments and community organisations.

Professional Accreditation

JCU nursing graduates are eligible to register with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMC) through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
