Cayratia trifolia

(Native Grape)

Description

This vine has alternate leaves with 3 leaflets and leaf-opposed tendrils. These have 5 branches each ending in an adhesive disk which enables the plant to cling to the trunk of trees. A similar vine occurs near coastlines further north but it lacks the adhesive pads and the tendril is 3 branched not five (C. maritima). Flowers small, greenish with 4 petals. Fruit is a black, fleshy berry, somewhat flattened.
