Short courses to get you prepared in 2013
In addition to the Study Skills sessions offered during Orientation Week and during semester, the Learning Advisers and Student Mentors facilitate a number of short courses for students with particular needs. Two such courses are described below.
Unistart
A three day course to kickstart your studies at JCU
Unistart is a 3-day program to assist students with their transition to university study. It is particularly recommended for students who have not studied for some time (two years or more). The program is run by student facilitators, with input from guest speakers and learning advisers. Unistart is for students in all courses and much of the time will be spent in Faculty-specific groups.
The program runs from Tuesday 12 February - Thursday 14 February 2013 from 9:30am – 3:30pm in Room 005 on the ground floor of the Law/Business and Creative Arts Building (Building 27).
There is no charge and application forms are available in the Orientation Handbook.

Half day writing course
Being able to write well-structured essays in an academic writing style is an essential skill at University. This course is designed to revise some of the skills needed to write an essay with the emphasis on the basic structuring of an essay.
Topics include autonomous learning, understanding the essay question, searching databases and organising your research, the writing process, critical reading, writing and note-taking, referencing, using academic language and strategies for editing your own work.
The course is offered on Saturday 9 March 2013 from 9:00am to 1:00pm in Sir George Kneipp Auditorium (Building 26).
The cost of the course is $10.00 ($5.00 for Health Care Card holders) and application forms will be available in the Orientation Handbook from December.

Festival of Learning
Come along on Saturday 16 March and let us show you that learning can be fun!
Learning Advisers and student mentors will help you succeed at JCU with valuable tools, tips and strategies.
Topics will include:
• Active learning – the only effective way to learn
• Mind Mapping – the genius study tool
• Easy ways to remember important things
• Learning strategies employed by successful students
The course is offered on Saturday 16 March 2013 from 9:00am to 4:00pm in Sir George Kneipp Auditorium (Building 26).
The cost of the course is $20 ($10 for health care card holders) which includes morning tea, lunch and handouts. Application forms are available in the Orientation Handbook
