To access email you need to have an active JCU Staff Office 365 mailbox OR an active JCU Student LIVE@EDU mailbox OR an active JCU staff Personal LIVE@EDU mailbox.
The login credentials for a JCU Staff Office 365 mailbox is Firstname.Surname@jcu.edu.au and your current password.
The login credentials for a JCU Student or JCU Staff personal LIVE@EDU mailbox is Firstname.Surname@my.jcu.edu.au and your current password

Undergraduates & Postgraduates
Undergraduate and Postgraduate students can access their JCU LIVE@EDU email via Outlook Web App using a web browser like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari or Chrome.
Staff can use one of the supported email clients to access their Office 365 staff account. Currently the supported clients are Outlook 2007 for PC and Entourage 2008 EWS for Mac.
Staff can also use the Outlook Web Access client to access their Office365 staff account via a supported Web Browser. Currently the supported browsers are:
Internet Explorer v7 or greater on PC for the full Outlook Web Access client
Firefox v3 or greater on PC and Mac for the light Outlook Web Access client
Safari v3 or greater on Mac and PC for the light Web Access Client.

It is recommended that JCU staff and students purchase access to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) if they intend to access JCU email and websites from home.
Outlook Web Access (staff Office 365 accounts) and LIVE@EDU Outlook Web App are probably the easiest way to access JCU email from home. Simply type http://staff.jcu.edu.au/ for Staff Office 365 accounts or http://my.jcu.edu.au/ for LIVE@EDU accounts in the location/address bar of your web browser.
Alternatively staff can set up Outlook 2007/2010 or Entourage 2008 EWS to access their JCU Office 365 account by way of their ISP.
A forwarding service is not available on Staff Office 365 accounts.
A forwarding rule can be created in LIVE@EDU accounts via the Options tools within Outlook Web App.
You can set up a vacation or auto-reply message by logging into either your Office 365 account via Outlook Web Access or an email client OR your LIVE@EDU account and setup your Auto-Reply message and selecting the Options link.
Note: Out of Office/Vacation messages setup in Staff personal LIVE@EDU email accounts do not apply to their Staff Office 365 accounts, an auto-response message will have to be created on both accounts.
Always remember to click on SAVE when you make any optional changes in either your Office 365 account or your LIVE@EDU account.
Once you have graduated from JCU or cease being an employee of JCU, your LIVE@EDU account will remain active. It is deemed to be an “email for life account”.
If you do not intend to log into this account frequently to check for new emails then please consider forwarding the mail to another email account that you do regularly use. This will ensure that you do not miss any important JCU related emails from areas like JCU Alumni.
The mailbox quotas for staff and students have been increased considerably with the new email services.
Staff Office 365 accounts provides 25GB of mailbox storage per staff member
LIVE@EDU accounts provide 10GB of mailbox storage for each student and for each staff for personal.
If the amount of email stored in your account exceeds your allocated mail storage quota you will be sent an automatic warning message. This message will remind you to remove old emails from your Inbox and mail folders that you do not need. Regularly maintain your email space!
Note: Mail (Inbox and all other mail folders), Calendar(s) entries, Contacts and Tasks are all included in the total mail store size.
All emails, into and out of, your JCU account are not subject to Internet Accounting charging. This may change. For the time being the costs associated with email receipt and delivery are covered by a central funding allocation.
There are a number of email aliases and lists provided at JCU to facilitate communication between users in particular organisational units or students in particular courses and subjects. A full list of these is available from the Contacts page.
Spam is unsolicited email, usually sent in bulk. Microsoft provide a full virus and spam scanning service for all Office 365 and LIVE@EDU mailboxes. You can also setup your own “allow and block” rules within each of these mail services via the Options tools.
Note: Rules setup on staff Office 365 mailboxes WILL NOT transfer to staff personal LIVE@EDU accounts and vice-versa. For further information on spam along with guidelines for naming and safely opening attachments see: Email Spam and Attachments Guide.
The University uses SOPHOS Anti-Virus Protection Software on the central mail system to check and clean all incoming and outgoing email messages. SOPHOS is available for installation on all University-owned computers; for more details please contact InfoHelp.
The University also uses SOPHOS Anti-Virus Protection Software on all the General Access and Teaching Computer Facilities (GATCF). This virus scanner runs in the background and checks the files and folders on the hard drives of these machines and also any disks inserted into the machines.
The virus scanner is updated every time a new virus signature is available.
JCU has a site license for SOPHOS Anti-Virus protection software. JCU Staff and students can install SOPHOS on their office and home computer.
On your own personal computer at home, it's your own responsibility to protect yourself from computer viruses.
You really need to think about virus protection and not be promiscuous with your disks. For more information on viruses and SOPHOS, please read our Computer Viruses Guide.
Your email is your own responsibility - it is important to look after it.
If you misuse the email service you can find yourself without an account for a particular period of time, depending on the severity of the offence.
This means that you could be denied access to computing facilities, email and the internet.
