Remote Access

The Library provides a proxying service called elibrary to provide access to resources from off campus.

elibrary will prompt you for your JCU username and password if required and then the resource will display.

It is also possible, but not necessary, to enable remote access before beginning to access any subscription materials.

Known Issues

Table of Contents Services

Many table of contents services do not provide elibrary-enabled links and don't work if you are off campus. Copy the item's address and paste it into the elibrary tool's address field and click 'Test The Link' to see the item.

Bookmarks and links

It is possible to bookmark or save a link to a web page accessed via elibrary. Save the bookmark in the normal manner. You must enable remote access for the URL to work later from off campus or edit the bookmark or link using the elibrary tool.

Tips

Creating elibrary-using Links

The elibrary tool creates links to subscription resources that will work for staff and students using them off campus (in emails or web pages).

The elibrary tool takes a working URL, removes the ".elibrary.jcu.edu.au" suffix (which only works if an elibrary session already exists) and adds the "http://elibrary.jcu.edu.au/login?url=" prefix which initiates an elibrary session when one does not already exist. It is important to test the link because if it fails it could indicate that the resource link is not a subscription resource and does not require elibrary to work off campus. elibrary can only work with sites it has been configured to proxy for.

To disable remote access

Closing down the browser or a period of inactivity will automatically disable remote access. However it is also possible to actively log off
