Fitness for a budget
James Cook University Student Association will launch its new Sport and Recreation Centre tomorrow (Thursday, April 16).
The $4.65m gym, which was funded by the Federal Government as part of its Regional Sport Development Fund, features world class facilities and equipment at a discounted price.
Much of the equipment has been imported from Italy and America, the gym will host Group Fitness from the Les Mills models and personal training sessions. It is anticipated that the Centre will become Townsville’s training venue for future Les Mills instructors.
The Centre will be managed by the University’s Student Association with the revenue raised from the venture being reinvested into additional infrastructure and services for students.
“The Centre will be run by qualified local staff and has one of the cheapest membership rates in Townsville. There will be discounts for students and University staff, and members of the community are encouraged to make use of the state of the art equipment on offer,” Student Association President, James Dickson said.
“Aerobics classes will be held before work, during lunch time and after work and the gym will remain open during Uni holidays.”
JCU Sports and Exercise, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy students will also be able to make good use of the Centre for their course requirements.
Full year memberships are $440 for Student Associations members (annual Student Association membership costs $40), $550 for JCU staff and students and $650 for general public.
The Centre will be officially launched tomorrow by JCU’s Chancellor, Ltd Gen John Grey (Rtd) and Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding at a ceremony tomorrow (Thursday, April 16) at 11.45am.
