ERA or Excellence in Research for Australia

ERA 2010 Results

The results of the first round of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative have been published by the ARC, and can be found here.

JCU was evaluated in 43 of the possible 157 subject areas (4-digit Fields of Research). In 23 of these, we were rated at world standard or above.

JCU’s research was rated the highest score of ‘5’ (which translates to ‘well above world standard’) in two specific subject areas:

  • Environmental Science and Management; and

  • Fisheries Sciences.

For both subject areas, JCU is the sole university in Australia to the highest rating of a ‘5’.

In seven other fields, we rate above world standard: geochemistry, geology, ecology, evolutionary biology, plant biology, zoology, and tourism.

Our subject areas rated at world standard are: Inorganic Chemistry, Oceanography, Physical Geography and Environmental Geoscience, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Genetics, Materials Engineering, Immunology, Neurosciences, Nursing, Specialist Studies in Education, Anthropology, Human Geography, Linguistics, and Historical Studies

At the 2-digit field of research level JCU rated at or above world standard in 8 of the 19 fields in which we were evaluated, including a ‘5’ for Environmental Sciences and “4”s for both Biological and Earth Sciences. We were not evaluated in 6 2-digit field of research.

The JCU ERA results, with Australian averages (calculated by the ARC as total ratings / # universities rated), can be found here.

ERA 2012

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Hon Senator Kim Carr, announced on 25 October 2010 that another round of ERA is scheduled for 2012, with the primary data set being publications produced between 2005 and 2010. The guidelines for the ERA 2012 submission process have now been released and can be found here.

The census date for eligible researchers, i.e. those whose outputs will be evaluated in ERA 2012, is set for the 31 of March 2011.

Further information on ERA 2012 can be found at http://www.arc.gov.au/era/era_2012/era_2012.htm

Review of the ERA Journal List

The ARC has refined the journal indicator for ERA 2012 and is currently revising the journal list. Profiles of A*, A, B and C ranks will no longer be used. The ARC will continue to maintain a list of eligible journals with Field of Research (FoR) codes, however, a conference list will not be used for ERA 2012.
