About the Excel Workbooks in Volume 1

The overview tables and charts for all Australian universities are based on AVCC and DEST data sources, as well as ThomsonReuters’ Essential Science Indicators and are stored in two (read-only) Excel workbooks: HERDC_UA_97-09.xlsx and ISI_ESI_11.xlsx

Each workbook contains an intro sheet and an index that uses macros for in-document hyperlinks.

HERDC_UA_97-09.xlsx contains:

  • A JCU summary overview

  • Weighted DEST Publication Points from 1997 onwards for all Universities

  • Total HERDC I ncome from 1997 onwards for all Universities

  • Trend Graphs (per HERDC category) with

    • Weighted DEST Publication Points

    • Weighted DEST Publication Points per capita (Research FTE)

    • JCU's DEST Publication Output compared with the National Output per capita

    • 3-year moving averages for IRU universities (3 yr moving average of HERDC points / 3 yr moving average of Research FTE shifted back 1 yr)

      • DEST Publication Points per Capita

      • Category 1 Income per Capita

      • Total HERDC Research Income per Capita

  • Histograms

    • JCU's DEST Publication (All) and Journal Article (C) points (2000 - 2006), compared with the other IRUA universities

    • Total DEST Publication Points (1997 onwards) for Universities (sorted descending by most recent Research FTE)

    • Total DEST Publication Points per capita (1997 onwards) for Universities (sorted descending by most recent Research FTE)

The ISI_ESI_11.xlsx workbook contains (next to an index sheet and an intro page):

  • JCU data from 2003 onwards

  • An Australian-wide and university overview from 2004 onwards

  • An overview of ISI statistics for Australia

  • Baseline Average Citation Rates (and Percentiles) per Research Field

  • Trends in Australian ranking per research field for which JCU makes the cut-off

  • Trends in 5-Year Citation Intervals for All Fields for James Cook University.

  • Trends in 5-Year Citation Intervals per research field for James Cook University.

The ESI reports cover an eleven year period, and categorises journals into 22 broad fields of research.
