Pro-Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship in Arts, Education and Social Sciences

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship in Arts, Education and Social Sciences was created by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences in September 2003 to attract exceptional students to degrees offered by the Faculty.

Quantum of the Scholarship:

Each year the Faculty will award one scholarship to the value of $10,000, to be paid after the census date in Study Period 1 and Study Period 2 of each of the first two years of study in four $2,500 installments.

Eligibility Criteria:

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship in Arts, Education and Social Sciences shall be open to competition among candidates who:

  • have a Queensland overall position score (OP) of 1, or its equivalent from other Australian states; and

  • have completed their final year of school within 2 years of applying for the scholarship; and

  • are domestic students (i.e. Australian or New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa); and

  • are enrolling full-time in an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

(Applicants must attach a certified copy of a birth certificate, passport or permanent visa as appropriate.)

Selection Criteria:

In addition to academic merit, and in the exercise of their absolute discretion, the Selection Committee will consider the following criteria:

  • the character of the applicant;

  • the motivation of the applicant to succeed in their chosen field;

  • demonstrated leadership;

  • participation in school or community organisations;

  • communication skills;

  • other achievements (i.e. debating, musical, sporting);

  • whether or not the candidate has received, or will receive, other scholarship support during their studies; and

  • any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.

Application Procedures:

Applications must be submitted on the official form by the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must attach to the official form:

  • a certified copy of their Student Education Profile (consisting of the Senior Certificate and Tertiary Entrance Statement) or equivalent;

  • a certified copy of their birth certificate, passport or permanent visa;

  • a curriculum vitae, including not more than three references;

  • a brief statement outlining their reasons for their choice of course;

  • details of any other scholarship received or pending;

  • authorisation to make appropriate enquiries concerning the applicant's character and suitability for the scholarship, including the right to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution; and

  • any other documentation that may assist the Selection Committee in judging the merit of the application.

Applications submitted without the above documentation will not be considered.

In reaching its decision the Selection Committee may require applicants to submit to interview.

5. Constitution of the Selection Committee:

The Selection Committee shall comprise:

  • The Pro Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences (Chair);

  • The Head of the School of Arts and Social Sciences;

  • The Head of the School of Education; and

  • The Head of the School of Indigenous Australian Studies.

6. Conditions of the Award:

The Scholarship shall be awarded at the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which reserves the right:

  • not to award a scholarship if no candidate of sufficient merit presents;

  • to award a scholarship for less than two years; and

  • to extend a scholarship for an incumbent recipient.

The Selection Committee determines all matters relating to the scholarship.

  • Bachelor of Social Science;

  • Bachelor of Social Work.

NOTE: Candidates for joint degrees which include any of the above courses are eligible to apply.

Conditions of the Scholarship:

  • The award of the Scholarship shall not be conditional on the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

  • In the event that the recipient suspends their study, the scholarship shall be suspended.

  • If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions or with any conditions imposed under these provisions, the Selection Committee may at its absolute discretion either terminate the award, withhold any further emoluments, or take such other action as it may deem necessary to enforce the holder’s compliance with these provisions.

  • The recipient of the scholarship shall continue to receive the award on condition that, in the opinion of the Selection Committee on advice from the head of the school in which the recipient is undertaking a course of study, the recipient maintains a satisfactory level of performance. Where it is determined that the level of academic performance is unsatisfactory, the Selection Committee may at its absolute discretion either: cancel the award or suspend the award for such time as it may determine and/or until academic performance is considered satisfactory. Where an award is cancelled pursuant to the provisions to this clause, such award may be awarded to another suitable candidate for the remainder of the original holder’s term.

  • Where the Selection Committee cancels or suspends a scholarship, a review of the decision shall be undertaken by an Appeal Panel at the request of the student within 14 days of receipt of the Committee’s decision. The scholarship may not be awarded to another candidate before the Appeal Panel makes its final decision on the review. The Appeal Panel shall comprise the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor or nominee (Chair); two members of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences appointed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and either the Student Association Academic Support Services Coordinator or the Student Association Welfare Coordinator. The staff members appointed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor shall have no association with the teaching of the subject(s) in which unsatisfactory academic performance is alleged. Unless the circumstances are exceptional, the Appeal Panel shall consider only: the student's grounds for requesting the review; any documents relevant to the finding of unsatisfactory academic performance; and the reasons for the decision by the Selection Committee.

Administration of the Scholarship:

The scholarship shall be administered by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Arts, Education and Social Sciences on behalf of the Selection Committee.

Definitions

Unless there appears a contrary intention in these rules:

"academic institution" includes University, Technical and Further Education College, private education provider, secondary school and any other institution that undertakes teaching or research;

"academic record" means the official records of the University, or any other academic institution that details the levels of academic achievement attained by the person whose academic record it is;

"award" means the scholarship;

"candidate" means a person applying for the scholarship.
