Townsville Bulletin Scholarship in Medicine

Nature of the Scholarship:
This scholarship will be awarded to a First Year student during the second Study Period (SP2) of that year. The scholarship will be for $5000 and will be used to provide tuition / fee relief in the following year (Year Two of the course). The $5000 will be transferred directly from the Townsville Bulletin to JCU at the beginning of the recipient's second year of study.
Eligibility Criteria:
The Townsville Bulletin Scholarship in Medicine shall be open to competition among candidates who:

are domestic students, ie Australian or New Zealand citizens or who hold a permanent visa; and
-
are enrolled in the MBBS programme at JCU;
-
whose family home lies in an area bounded by Innisfail in the North, Bowen in the South and Mt Isa to the West.
(A certified copy of your birth certificate, passport or permanent visa must be attached.)
Selection Criteria:
The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

academic standing after SP1 of a Distinction or High Distinction;

the character of the candidate as supported by no more than three letters of support. Each letter will be no longer than one A4 page typed in a 12 Font (Ariel or Times New Roman); and
-
the submission of an essay (max 1000 words) outlining how this scholarship would better enable the candidate to succeed in the study of medicine during their second year at JCU.
Application Procedures:
Applications must be submitted to the Scholarships Office on the official form (sections A and E only need to be completed) no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.
Applicants must attach to the official form:

a certified copy of their academic record from SP1 at JCU;

no more than three letters of reference attesting to the candidate's good character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship;
-
the essay outlined in 3.3.
Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.
The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff at JCU.
Selection Process:
The award of the scholarship shall be made at the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, and shall comprise of:

the Chair of the Academic Board (Chair), or nominee;

the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences, or nominee; and
-
the Dean of the School of Medicine, or nominee.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award the scholarship in any year.
The Selection Committee shall determine all matters relating to the scholarship.
Conditions of the Scholarship:
In the event that the recipient suspends their Second Year studies prior to the payment census date in Study Period One (SP1) the scholarship will be suspended.
Administration of the Scholarship:
The Scholarship will be administered by the Dean of the Medical School, or nominee, on behalf of the Selection Committee. The funds of the scholarship ($5000) will be invoiced to the Townsville Bulletin at the beginning of the Second Year of the recipient's studies and allocated toward tuition / fee relief. No cash will be awarded to the recipient.
Because the scholarship is being awarded by an external body to the University, the University its servants or agents, shall not be liable for theat benefit or obligation.
Definitions
Unless there appears a contrary intention in these rules:
-
"academic institution" includes University, Technical and Further Education College, private education provider, secondary school and any other institution that undertakes teaching or research;

"academic record" means the official records of the University, or any other academic institution that details the levels of academic achievement attained by the person whose academic record it is;

"award" means the scholarship;

"awardee" means the recipient of a scholarship; and
-
"candidate" means the person applying for the scholarship
Scholarships for the purpose of these guidelines exclude scholarships for project and stipend support of research higher degree students.
