James Cook University’s campuses and research stations are on the doorstep of some of the world’s most spectacular tropical environments; the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics: the tropical savannas of Cape York Peninsula; the deserts of the arid outback and the world class mineral districts of Mount Isa and Charters Towers. All offer rich research opportunities and have positioned JCU as one of the world’s leading research and education centres for the study of the earth and environmental sciences in the tropics.
The Economic Geology Research Unit (EGRU) in JCU’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences has international standing as one of only a handful of groups in Australia, and approximately 10 in the world, providing a comprehensive range of research and development services for the minerals geoscience industry and government sectors.
New, collaborative research programs initiated by EGRU explore mineral resources in north Queensland through improved understanding of mineralising processes and locations. This research has influenced the steadily rising trend of exploration expenditure in the region. Copper, lead, zinc and gold deposits are all found within the Mount Isa region.
JCU researchers are also instrumental in developing skills and technology for the minerals and resources industries, creating economic and environmental benefits. James Cook University is one of a handful of universities in Australia to offer study and research programs in geology.
The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences facilitates knowledge transfer in the field of economic geology between public sector researchers, industry professionals and companies.
